A komodaru is a sake barrel wrapped in woven straw called kome. Originally used in the Edo period to protect barrels during sake transport, today they are used for ceremonial kagami-biraki at celebrations, or to showcase sake brands. In modern times, resin coverings are sometimes used instead of straw. Komodaru are enjoyed at many special occasions, such as New Year’s, weddings, and longevity celebrations.
